Maria Parado de Bellido is celebrated as one of the heroes of independence in Peru. In May 1822 she was executed in a plaza in Ayacucho because she refused to give information on the rebel forces where her husband and sons fought.

In 1925 a statue was erected in the place of her execution to remember her.
